For our May book group, Ava treated us to a catered Wegman's feast - and decorated the table with seashells and rocks conjuring the beach from this month's book. That Ava could nurture us so lovingly while taking care of her dear mom proved she is a Babe and a balabooste!

The Babes and Chicks hit Fugakyu for sushi, sake, and other Japanese delights! Thanks to Ellen for hosting a fabulous, fun, and yummy feast in our very own private room. Thanks to Diane for orchestrating the celebration of Joyce and Dot's birthdays and well wishes for dear Ava who has had a challenging month! Love and laughter - and some erudite book talk - filled our fancy little room. Margot was missed, but we look forward to her return and to be regaled with tales from her adventures at sea!
![]() March 9, 2016 Book: When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe We gathered tonight at Masona Grill in West Roxbury. Though the book was set in the Philippines, the fare at Masona was Peruvian. It was colorful and delicious. The consensus on the book was that the stories within the story were magical, and we all learned a lot about the history of the Philippines. A dandy, though sometimes harrowing read. We ate heartily and shared tales of lives gone a little OOC.Diane, Margot, and Ellen were much missed. The chicks donned their burkas, and the H.C.W.R. (a.k.a. Book Babes) went out on the town to Helmand in Cambridge for the most scrumptious Afghani feast. Dot hosted us to the most delectable assortment of appetizers, main courses, and desserts including lamb, pumpkin, chicken, okra, glazed carrots, with enticing spices, sauces, and delicious bread. We all agreed that The Pearl That Broke Its Shell was feat of storytelling - heartwarming and harrowing at the same time. Dear Wonderful Dot, thanks for the great book choice - and for treating us to such a wonderful meal.
We missed our absent Babes - Ellen, Diane, and Margot - and look forward to when it it our naseeb to all be together again! Dear wonderful Margot -
You worked so lovingly to make such an exquisite meal for us last night. From every wonderful morsel on the gorgeous appetizer trays (she shopped Wegman's, Ava!) - to the delicious soup, wonderful cauliflower dish, and the tasty fish, the meal was divine. John cooked the cod perfectly. Yum! Then came dessert! The crystallized flowers and the flower power cake were out of this world - delicious, lovely, and so unique. It was a transporting experience sampling all those treats! And all the lovely flowers (from all those shops) created the perfect atmosphere and sent the perfect "message." Thanks so very much for heaping such love and kindness upon us, Margot. So good to see everyone who could make it, and it was so nice to have your friend Carol join us again. Joyce and Ava, we lamented your absence! We had a great conversation about the book, too. The Language of Flowers was a great choice, Margot. It gave us all many things to ponder. Can't wait to rendezvous at Dot's next month! Ellen -
Thanks for hosting a super special holiday bash! It was so much fun - the drinks, the lovely goody bags, the yummy treats, the ICEBOX MOCHA CAKE -- you are an amazing hostess who makes us all feel loved. Babes - the scarves and potluck hors d-ouevres & desserts were awesome. We rock! So much fun to see everyone - and so cool that the HP Emeritus, dear Janice, joined us. Dot - sending love and good health vibes your way! Can't wait till we gather in January -- happy holidays & here's to lots of hilarity, erudition, and love in 2016. Book: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
Hostess: Diane Exquisite meal - wonderful comfort food - raviolis, brussel sprouts, and tuscan roasted cauliflower. As always, Diane's table was a work of art. The care Diane takes with every detail always makes me feel so blessed and wonderful. Fantastic book discussion - we all loved this one. Babes are good medicine. We missed you, Margot! See everyone Monday, Dec. 14th for the Holiday Happening at Ava's. Yankee Scarf swap.... |
